What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a series of sessions focused on improving tone and awareness of the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue. Read more on my blog.

Is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy for Children or Adults?

There is no age that wouldn't benefit from having improved function of the orofacial complex - infants to the elderly; However, it's generally harder to accomplish, if not impossible, on some children younger than 4 to 5 years old due to compliance, attention span, and understanding of exercises. Even so, it's still a good idea to have them evaluated early so a care plan can be established.

How Do I Know if I have an Airway Disorder?

There are several symptoms associated with airway restriction and orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), and they are frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, which is why it's important to have a comprehensive evaluation done by a provider trained in airway health. Read more about common symptoms on my blog.

What Providers Should I See?

For anyone with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), it's extremely important to build an interdisciplinary team of providers with specialized training in airway disorders. A great place to start is having a consultation with a myofunctional therapist (like myself!) as they often have already built a referral network of reliable providers in their area.

Frequent referral sources include Orthodontists, ENTs, Allergists, Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs), Chiropractors, Craniosacral Therapists (CST), Feeding Therapists, Massage Therapists, IBCLCs, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and more.
